Lights Out in Nigeria - written by Chimamanda Adichie

Image
Article written by award-winning writer Chimamanda Adichie, originally published on New York Times . Interesting read. Find below... We call it light; “electricity” is too sterile a word, and “power” too stiff, for this Nigerian phenomenon that can buoy spirits and smother dreams. Whenever I have been away from home for a while, my first question upon returning is always: “How has light been?” The response, from my gateman, comes in mournful degrees of a head shake. Bad. Very bad. The quality is as poor as the supply: Light bulbs dim like tired, resentful candles. Robust fans slow to a sluggish limp. Air-conditioners bleat and groan and make sounds they were not made to make, their halfhearted cooling leaving the air clammy. In this assault of low voltage, the compressor of an air-conditioner suffers — the compressor is its heart, and it is an expensive heart to replace. Once, my guest room air-conditioner caught fire. R. Kelly beat up and urinated on for refusing to perform, and there might be a video

Image
According to reports, R. Kelly was 'allegedly' kidnapped, beaten up and urinated on by a group of goons at Gulf Port MS over the weekend for collecting about $50k to sing at a club in Gulfport and then refusing to perform. The event organisers tried to persuade him but when he refused, thugs attacked both R.Kelly and his security and even stole his chain. Now they are claiming the whole thing was filmed and have threatened to release the video footage if R.Kelly doesn't return the money. Eyewitnesses and friends of eyewitnesses who allegedly saw the beat down talked about it on Twitter

F ormer CBN Governor Charles Soludo has replied Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala's  response to his viral article. Interesting read. Find below.... I read some of the responses to my article, “Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election”, and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the debate. I am glad that the debate has finally taken off. I have decided, for the record, to re-enter the debate if only to set some records straight and hopefully elevate the debate further. Whom do I respond to? First, let me thank Gov Kayode Fayemi for his very mature and professional response on behalf of the APC. It forms a great basis for deepening the conversation. Pat Utomi, Oby Ezekwesili, Iyabo Obasanjo, and thousands of other patriotic Nigerians have raised the content of the debate. Femi Fani-Kayode made me laugh, as usual . The Gov. Jang faction of the Governors’ Forum played the usual politics, although I know what most
