Pics: Fire rips through one of the world's tallest residential buildings in Dubai

The Dubai Marina Torch, an 86-storey building which stand s (1,105 ft), was engulfed by fire in the early hours of today forcing a mass evacuation. The fire reportedly started around the 52nd floor then moved to the lower parts of the building. Thousands of residents were evacuated from the highrise and it took more than a dozen fire trucks to extinguish the flames. Authorities say there were no reports of deaths or injuries from the Marina Torch fire and the cause of the fire is not immediately clear. See photos from the incident after the cut...

30 killed in Boko Haram attack near Chibok

At least 30 people were killed during an attack by Boko Haram members in Thlaimakalama and Gatamarwa villages in Borno state yesterday February 19th. Confirming the attack to AFP, the head of the Chibok Elders Forum, Pogo Bitrus said; "From information coming in from residents of the two villages at least 30 people were killed in the attacks

Fayose: Buhari in London Hospital for medical treatment, says: "he is vindicated"

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said that the APC presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) who  travelled to the United Kingdom (UK) for medical treatment is being attended to at a London hospital, describing the medical trip as a vindication of his earlier stand that Buhari was sick and lacked the required capacity to rule Nigeria.  He said; "as against the claim of the APC that Bihari was on a short working visit to the UK, Buhari is being treated at a hospital located at Cavendish Street, Cavendish Square, W2 London West End, London." Jailbreak reported in Calabar

Unknown gunmen this morning at about 11.30 stormed the Afokang Prison in Calabar, Cross River, and freed several inmates. Several people were shot but the number of casualties have not been disclosed. Shops and other businesses in the area were closed down following the rampage according to a report by The Nation.

Pics: Lagos State Govt begins demolition of burnt Balogun market

The Lagos State Government today Friday Feb. 20th began the demolition of the 3 buildings gutted by fire on January 12 at the popular Balogun Market in Central Lagos. Fire gutted the buildings housing about 100 shops and destroyed goods worth millions of naira. Officials of the company who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity said that it was the govt that gave directive for the buildings to be demolished. The head of the demolition team said that the work would take some time to finish. Mrs Uju Agunna, a trader who sold clothes in one of the shops gutted, told NAN that she would rent the same place anytime the shops were rebuilt. “I will like to go back to my shop. I have been in this Balogun for over 15 years so it is difficult for me to go and rent somewhere else.’’ “We hope that when the demolition exercise is completed the owners can start building. But now I am sharing a shop with my friend as you can see,” Agunna said. Source: NAN
