Both the train and the vehicle were damaged, but there were no casualties, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The accident damaged the electrical connections in the train’s engine and left it immovable on one part of the road.
The incident caused traffic gridlock in the city for many hours, leaving many stranded and preventing some others from attending to their businesses.
An eye witness, Mr Cyril Ohaegbu said the accident happened at about 5:45 a.m. Ohaegbu who seels bread by the Railway Flagmen office, said he had resumed for business when the accident happened.
According to him, some policemen were conducting stop and search at a spot very close to the railway track when the accident occurred.
“The driver of the articulated vehicle was being stopped by the police and he didn’t stop but when he reached a point, he became confused because of the intensity of the moving train’s horn.
“Because his vehicle is the long type, he did not know whether to go forward or backward so he stopped there and ran away. That is why the train hit his vehicle,”Ohaegbu said.
Another eye-witness, Mr Okechukwu Ebere reiterated Ohaegbu’s claims saying “policemen were stopping the driver of the articulated vehicle but he failed to stop.”
He went on to say the accident occurred because the railway level crossings had lost their boom barriers which bar vehicles from crossing when trains are approaching.
He urged the federal government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation to replace the barriers to save lives of residents.
The accident comes just a week after 13 people lost their lives in a fatal road crashwhich occurred along the Ilorin/Ogbomoso expressway.
The accident involved a truck and a hummer bus coming from Kaduna state.
